This whiskey fueled two-man frenzy of blues-driven rock’n’roll noise straight from Fort Wayne, Indiana promise to hit you like a shock wave and show you a foot-stompin’ good time. Left Lane Cruiser is comprised of Joe Evans on slide guitar and vocals with Brenn Beck on one big-ass bass drum, harmonica and a toolbox full of percussive gear. The raw blues duo of LLC have practiced through thick and thin to hone a sound unlike any other and have been together long enough to have previously released a couple of self-produced EPs. “Let your soul drive what you do” is the premise of their music, “give it all you got, and everything is an instrument: trash cans, paint trays, hubcaps, ladders, you name it.” Learning their craft by playing at house parties, at the corner streets of their home town, and rehearsing in a heatless garage, they have developed their personal take on the North Mississippi Hill Country sound. They have toured relentlessly, sharing the stage with artists such as Robert Belfour, Black Diamond Heavies, Hillstomp, and Chris Cotton among others. De Amsterdam Klezmer Band performs Eastern European Jewish music, influenced by Gypsy and Balkan music.

Since its foundation in 1996 by saxophone player Job Chajes, the band has evolved rapidly. In no time the band became world-famous in Amsterdam for its many vibrant performances on the streets, in the parks and in the pubs. Soon the rest of The Netherlands followed: the band performed at the Oerol Festival in 1999, 2000 and 2001 to great acclaim and was invited to the Noorderslagfestival in January 2001 (the media describing their performance as ‘the great surprise of the festival’) , followed by the Lowlands Festival in August 2001. During the same period the band toured in Slovenia , Switzerland and Italy and completed three successful tours of Turkey.

The third CD of De Amsterdam Klezmer Band , Limonchiki, was released on the New York label Knitting Factory label and the band had a grand tour of the Dutch club scene in the autumn of 2001, with as its highpoint the presentation of Limonchiki in Paradiso, Amsterdam .

In September 2003 the cd Katakofti was released. It’s the result of a collaborative effort of De Amsterdam Klezmer Band and the Galata Gypsy Band from Turkey . The cd was released on the Turkish world music label Kalan Records.

In january 2005 the new cd SON (Russian for ‘dream’) is released, containing a veritable treasure-trove of new Amsterdam Klezmer and Balkan music.

Nowadays only part of the Amsterdam Klezmer Band repertory consists of traditionals from the Balkan and Klezmer traditions. Most of the AKB repertory has been created by the band members themselves, who all without exception contribute musically to an ever-growing melting-pot of infectious Balkan/Gypsy/Klezmer cross-overs.

Perkalaba is a band from Carpathia, Western Ukraine, playing energetic ska-punk-balkan beat. Their gigs are really mad and majestic.
First of all one thing has to be mentioned, this band doesn`t pretend to be nuts, they are! That`s why they perform with a psychiatrist. Beside their musical quality it`s mostly their curious sense of humor that distinguishes the band. Named after a tiny Hutzul-village in the Carpathian moun-tains, which is their musical Zion, they mix all kinds of music of the Ukrainian regions with Punk and Ska-elements to a energetic Hutzul-Ethno-Ska that is not only extremely danceable but also comes with beautiful melodies. It`s their freaky show, the charismatic singer and their joy of playing what fascinates the audience even at extended two and a half hours gigs. Moreover the band is always full of nonsense, so spontaneous unplugged sessions at all imaginable places are one of their peculiarities

LLC is another two-piece gritty, raw, dirty blues outfit but the depth of sound they bring is unreal. First you have Freddy J IV (Joe) on guitar and hoarse, screamed vocals. All too often people talk about smoke and whiskey ripped throats, but in the case of Freddy J IV, his vocal cords appear to be held together by only a few sinewy strands.

People always talk about emcees being hungry on verses, well, in this case I think Joe is thirsty. He rips through the tracks, giving every ounce of sweat and energy he has, in a Southern Pavlovian response. It's like he knows the minute the track finishes, he can catch his breath and pound a shot. I can picture him tossing the glassware across the studio, wiping his brow and signaling to Brenn to start up again. It doesn’t matter that they are in the studio not on stage, he treats the recordings like a performance; live, rugged and adrenaline/whiskey fueled.

Joe is backed up by Brenn. While he is listed as the "drummer", Brenn is much, much more. He pounds through the kit, stretching the limit of the material like the seat on Kim Kardashian's jeans. He fills open spaces with harmonicas, mouth harps, and backing (occasional lead) vocals and you are left with a wall of sound that hits you in the jaw like you were caught dancing with it's girl.

Obviously, you can tell I love this record. That's the beauty of blogging not critiquing. I don't have to waste my time looking for some counter point. I can gush about the fact the cover design on the record reminds me of the old Jimmy Smith cover for Root Down. I can say that the fact Brenn's nickname (Sausage Paw) makes me want to love this band even more. But most importantly, this record blows the door off the hinges for 12 songs. Maraca's strong interest in Spanish and Portuguese cultures motivated the concept album Longe around the writings of the early 20th century Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. Singer Gabriela Vermelho sure has the warmth, flexibility, and range to mimic traditional styles, but the rhythm section remains steeped in rock music, giving the grooves a feel heavier than expected. Then again, Longe is not meant to be genuine Portuguese folk. The backwards guitar introducing the opening track, "Dobre," is as good a clue as any. Petr Filák's oud adds a Sephardic color, but the piece is resolutely modern. Trumpeter Frantisek Slavík (of Iva Bittová's Cikori band) contributes neocool touches in this and a few more pieces. Two songs are sung in English, the other ones are in Portuguese. Arrangements are carefully tailored to offer a balance of tradition (violin, trumpet) and innovation (in the bass work of Ales Obkrácil, particularly creative and unpredictable). Pessoa's words, especially his darker, more intimate poems, find fresh resonances in these elegant songs. Highlights include the delicate "Sonhos," the very East European "I Know," and the teasing bossanova "Nuvens." This is world fusion of a different kind, relying on very adult alternative pop atmospheres instead of the usual hyped-up Latin dance rhythms. Try it, if only for Vermelho's highly seductive voice.

Les Reines Prochaines are great and delicious femine art cabaret band from Switzerland with really crazy live performance shows, ironic lyrics in Deutch, French, English etc.

Really beautiful

With a lively blend of music, lights, video, props and costumes, not to mention personality, les Reines Prochaines bridge politically infused, avant-garde art and colourful, accessible entertainment. The Basel-based group, whose alumni includes renowned artist Pipilotti Rist, has seen some lineup changes since their start in 1987, yet their method and madness have generally remained the same.

"A kind of language has developed in the music and the performance and the way of working, and this has grown over 18 years, so it's quite strong," says Barbara Naegelin, one of the group's newer members. An integral part of this language is the music, a smorgasbord of 20th-century European sounds, from classic cabaret to traditional Eastern, with touches of the contemporary. Throughout their shows, singer-songwriters Michèle Fuchs, Fränzi Madörin, Muda Mathis, Sus Zwick and Naegelin pass the mic and the instruments, taking turns singing lead (in German, French and English) and playing horns, keys, strings, synths, guitars and drums.

Accompanying their democratic musicianship is a substantial dose of liberal politics, particularly feminism. Les Reines Prochaines have always dealt with women's issues in their work, but Switzerland's swing to the right in 2003's elections, which left only one woman in its government, has not only re-stoked the group's fire, but brought a new generation into the liberal fold, a major step forward from the laissez-faire apoliticism and feminist backlash of the late '90s and early '00s. That said, les Reines's approach to politics bears little resemblance to the strident methods of North America's street activists and big womyn on campus.

Review: "I don't think it's possible to overrate the importance of the landscape. It will always suck you in but it will affect you in different ways depending on location. I don't think it's a coincidence that a lot of the most fascinated music created today has its origin in places draped in natural beauty or which hold certain characteristics of a similar power. I'm not quite sure what's magical about the place Daniel Padden calls home but judging by the sounds presented on his second solo outing Owl of Fives there got to be something. Padden is known for his work with the indescribable and quite wonderful Volcano the Bear combo and this solo album is right up there in terms of sonic qualities. As a matter of fact I think he's actually trekking to the same valley of hidden music that the 'Bear so successfully pay a visit every now and then. It's like the music just has been hanging in the air of this specific vista, awaiting the right guy to come along and interpret it to something, which is audible for the masses. What we're served is a kind of free folk which comes packed with equal parts melancholia, dissonance and fragile beauty. No track is ever built up the way you expect them to be but there's nothing forced about these multi-instrumental folk meanderings. I am not really sure how Padden manages to be so successful at his game but there's something so natural in the way keys, strings, horns, bells, percussion merge into one united trail through the wilderness. Words like stumbling, fractured and fragmentized comes to mind but the overall impression is rather the one of seasons going by and colors changing in accordance to the sounds presented. Imagine an instrumental version of Tanakh teaming up with Kemialliset Ystavat or Tower Recordings and you're definitely in the right terrain. And what a mesmerizing terrain it proves to be."

Perkalaba group from Western Ukraine, playing Hutzul-ethno-ska-punk music. Perkalaba started their career in the 1998, in Ivano-Frankivsk (Western Ukraine). At that time, Perkalaba was a ska - punk oriented band, with some influence of roots reggae playing in the underground club scene.

The music of Perkalaba is inspired by various ethnic music from around the world, especially from various regions of Ukraine, such as Hutzul, Bukovyna and Zakarpattya. Other influences include the punk music of the Pogues' Shane McGowan, Element of Crime and from reggae such bands and artists as Bob Marley, Manu Chao, Skatalites. After the success of Goran Bregovic, Orchestra Bobana Markovica, No Smoking Orchestra by Emir Kusturica this is the Ukrainian answer.

Perkalaba group, which is well known to everybody in Ukraine, Poland and elsewhere, who appear at all kinds of folk-rock related festivals. If you have not had an opportunity to see them yet, but you also are a fan of the Ukrainian folk-rock, I do recommend that you give them your ears and full attention. Especially if you like folk punk. As so many uUkrainian artists, their music is of high quality and they don't do things by halves. As many eyewitnesses say, even today this group is already able to rouse an audience of many thousands, and their music has spread like a wild-fire.

Here there is energy without limit, and I know for sure that the group rouses even those who do not like such music very much, and this fact speaks for itself. One may use different epithets. Well roasted, so yellow that looks black, flashing of dry salted knitting needles, quick green pressure, a fragment of a joker in a looking glass. In other words, here both musical torpedoes and songs, which may be called ballads, are presented.

Or you may not call them that, as there is no less restlessness at this disc than melody, and they do not lack beautiful melodies. I hope, it will be like that in future, because this first album of theirs is cheerful and bright news.

ČANKIšOU [3 albums]

Czech band Čankišou became famous in the Czech Republic and also abroad for its concerts full of energy and wild rhythms. Concerts run by singer Karel Herman who is very impressive not only because of his voice but also his figure become wild dance parties few minutes after beginning. Čankišou mixes influences from various ethnics with rock roots and with its rich collection of exotic instruments travels the world from Réunion island in an Indian ocean to Pakistan.

Čankišou was established at a Christmas party in 1999 by rock musicians. They put together various exotic and common rock instruments and started to explore world music field which was completely new for them at that time. Čankišou music is based on an old legend about one legged Canki people and the band also learnt their language. Within nearly 10 years of existence the band has become one of the top world music bands in the Czech republic and has travelled 13 countries so far.

Čankišou published several successful CD´s: first CD called Music of the Canki people (Hudba lidu Čanki, 2000) is full of energy and passion from new meeting/exploring with world music. More thoughtful Densé ju (2002) includes tittle Mongolian folk song, which was brought by singer Karel Herman from a festival in Mongolia. Third Gamagaj (2004) is inspired by a book Baudolino by Umberto Eco (all by FT Records). New CD called Lé La was published in spring 2008 by Indies Scope Reocrds. These guys are said to have has some kind of art realtionship with Tom Waits, Beeeeefheart & Zappa. One guy said about their new album that it sounds like said it sounds like Manson-sings-Waits.

I wouldn't make any suggestions who these MAN MAN are like or similar to, although I can hear something close to early good old Queen, heh-heh, but the only thing I'd really like to say - these guys are magicians, and their music is made to be loved with all your inner and outer ears:)
